Police on Tuesday night arrested two people in connection with the murder of Sultana Suraiya, 65, mother of The Business Standard news editor Abu Shyem Akhund.
The arrested are — Md Labu, 29, son of Md Shah Jaman of Kanchabari Moddopara Chorpouli of Tangail Sadar upazila, and Al Amin Akand, 22, son of Siraj Akand of West Bhuapur of Bhuapur upazila in Tangail.
While addressing a press conference on Wednesday morning, Tangail police superintendent Mohammed Siraj Amin said that they arrested the duo getting clues after checking the cellphone of the victim.
‘In primary interrogation the arrested confessed to the police about their involvement in the murder,’ the police official said, adding that they were produced before a Tangail court for next action.
Police recovered the throat-slit body of Sultana Suraiya from her house at West Bhuapur of Bhuapur municipal area in Tangail on early Friday.
The deceased was the wife of freedom fighter Abdur Rahim Akhund. She used to live alone in her house at village West Bhuapur.
Local people said that the neighbours and family members found her cellphone switched off on Thursday night and they went to her house to check on her.
They found that the throat-slit body of the victim was lying on the floor of a room which was locked from the outside.
The victim’s son Abu Shyem Akhund said that they had no enemies. He suspected that some drug addicts might have committed the murder.
He demand exemplary punishment for those involved in the murder.
Bhuapur police station officer-in-charge Md Ahsan Ullah said that a case was filed in this connection on Friday afternoon.
